The Springboard Teams
In 2009, applications came in from all over the world and we chose the top four teams to bring to Cambridge. Here’s some brief info about what each of them is up to.
PagerDuty
PagerDuty is an alarm dispatching service for system administrators and support teams. PagerDuty collects alerts from your business’s existing monitoring tools (Nagios, Monit, Pingdom, etc) and calls or SMSes the engineer on duty if there’s a problem. If the assigned engineer doesn’t answer, PagerDuty will automatically escalate the issue by notifying someone else. PagerDuty fills a gap in many of today’s monitoring tools by providing sophisticated on-call management features typically found only in high-price enterprise solutions. PagerDuty’s on-call schedules, alarm escalations, telephone alerts, and phone-based incident management ensure that your support staff are rapidly notified of any system problem.

TidePowerd
TidePowerd is making GPU programming easier for everyone. We are building tools for software developers who want to leverage the power of GPUs in their applications without having to worry about the intricacies of programming them. Our unique compiler/runtime hybrid automatically handles many common GPU development tasks, leaving developers to concentrate on the important parts of their code. TidePowerd’s GPU compiler is available for several high-level programming languages, and is compatible with both nVidia and ATI hardware. While GPU computing isn’t a panacea, many companies exploring GPU development have achieved enormous speedups in their compute-intensive applications (commonly 10-20x, up to 1000x in some cases). Visit us at tidepowerd.com to sign up for our newsletter and learn more about how GPU computing from TidePowerd can help your applications stand out from the competition.

Meta Alternative
Meta Alternative is a Cambridge-based start-up that produces optimisation and static code analysis tools for the Microsoft .NET platform. In June 2009 Meta Alternative was awarded the Angel Prize in Cambridge University Entrepreneurs business competition. We have developed Meta Optimiser, a product that improves the speed and memory usage of .NET programs. This is the first ever automated optimisation tool. Using Meta Optimiser results in faster running software without the need for time-consuming and risky hand-optimisations. This means that programming code stays readable and maintainable, and resulting programs get to market faster.

The accidental incubator
Over the course of the last year we’ve managed to create an accidental incubator.
After meeting start-ups at various events, we found ourselves playing host to about a dozen people across four companies here at our offices. They all seem to like it, and we like them, which inspired us to put together Springboard.
If you want an impartial opinion then these are the people to contact.
